As The Green Hornet heads toward becoming the first big comic book movie of 2011, Sony has released the first official pictures of star Seth Rogen in the title role with his ingenious sidekick Kato, played by Jay Chou.

The Green Hornet stills, released Monday through Yahoo Movies, show plenty of masks, guns and a giant explosion. Thanks to madcap Rogen and always-quirky French director Michel Gondry, the movie — based on the vintage vigilante that’s thrilled generations in various formats, from 1930s radio shows to current comic books — is virtually guaranteed to be funnier, or at least more eccentric, than most superhero fare. The 3-D movie will be released Jan. 14.

Night owls take note: The first Green Hornet trailer debuts during Monday night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live (11:35 p.m./10:35 p.m. Central) on ABC.
